Let’s talk about
Gemini Surfactants
What are Gemini Surfactants?
Gemini surfactants are also called dimeric surfactants as they have two hydrophilic head groups and two hydrophobic groups in the molecules. The two hydrophilic groups are linked with a spacer.
Conventional surfactants generally have a single hydrophilic head group and a single hydrophobic group in the molecule (see below).
Gemini surfactant vs. traditional surfactant
Advantages / Properties of Gemini Surfactants
- Gemini surfactants are much more surface active than conventional surfactants.
- High level of efficiency in reducing surface tension.
- Geminis have low CMC values compared to conventional surfactants of equivalent chain length (= CMC is the concentration of surfactants in the formulation at which micelles start forming.)
- Gemini surfactants have a variety of uses. They can be used as a wetting agent, foam booster, hair smoothness enhancer, and hair drying time shortener.
- Gemini surfactants have excellent adsorption and dispersion capacities.
- Good water solubility
